LDAP and Kerberos authentication, authorization, and directory management

To address the issues of authentication, authorization, and directory management, we have implemented a multi-cluster, multi-desktop directory system based on the Kerberos Network authentication Protocol, and the LDAP lightweight directory access prototocol, as implemented by OpenLDAP.

These protocols and implementations were chose because of compliance with open standards, and availability of open source implementations. Our mandate is to research novel and new ways of getting the most out of high performance computing systems, and by choosing open source code and open standards implementations, we have the flexibility to try new things that vendors maybe be unwilling or unable to support.
